Governor of the Central Bank of Libya Meets with Director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department at the(IMF)

H.E. Naji Mohammed Issa, Governor of the Central Bank of Libya, commenced his official engagements with a meeting held on Monday, April 21, 2025, in Washington, D.C., with Mr. Jihad Azour, Director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), accompanied by his team, during the Annual Meetings of the IMF and the World Bank.

Discussions during the meeting focused on the latest developments in Libya’s economic and financial landscape, as well as the pivotal role played by the Governor in navigating the country through a protracted crisis, deepened by ongoing political and institutional fragmentation. Governor Issa also presented his strategic outlook for the coming period, outlining the main priorities and challenges he is working to address in both the short and long term.

Mr. Azour and the delegation of IMF experts commended the Central Bank of Libya for its proactive role in addressing the ongoing economic challenges. They highlighted the encouraging progress achieved through recent actions taken by the Bank, including efforts to ease liquidity constraints, introduce impactful initiatives, and foster consensus among key stakeholders on adopting a unified budget and implementing urgent reforms. These steps have collectively contributed to a gradual improvement in the performance of the Libyan dinar.

The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the importance of supporting the Governor’s initiative at both the national and international levels to ensure its success and sustainability.
