Governor of the Central Bank of Libya discussed the experiences of global central banks in managing inflation, and the challenges facing African central banks.
H.E Mr. Saddek Omar ElKaber, the Governor of the Central Bank of Libya, participated along with Mr. John C. Williams, Executive Director of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, Agustin Carstens, General Manager of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS), Kazuo Ueda, Governor of the Bank of Japan, and Ms. Christine Lagarde, President of the European Central Bank, in attendance of several governors from global and African central banks, the discussion involved the experiences of the French, Canadian, European, Japanese central banks and U.S. Federal Reserve in managing inflation. The meeting also addressed the challenges facing African central banks, the importance of coordination and cooperation among them, and the role of central banks in financial stability, emphasizing the significance of central bank independence. This discussion took place during the annual meeting of African central bank governors on the sidelines of the BIS’ annual meeting in Basel, Switzerland, on Sunday, 30th of June 2024.
